Steven Allen Sewell was born in Oklahoma City in 1956. He joined the US Navy in 1974 and served as a LCM boat coxswain overseas aboard the USS Raleigh LPD 1 as part of the sixth fleet, Amphibious Squadron 8, in eastern Med operations, including Operation Fluid Drive, the evacuation of 110 Americans and 166 foreign nationals from Beirut, Lebanon.
He embarked upon a full time artistic career in 1986. He is X-Designs trained, Columbus, Ohio. While at X Designs, he was involved in projects consisting of contracted work for Disney, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe, Bath and Body Works, and Victoria's Secret. Since that time, he has gained national recognition for his signart, murals and sculpture. His artwork can be seen in Caesar's Palace Forum , Las Vegas, Nevada, the Billy the Kid Museum, Ft Sumner, NM, the IUFO Museum, Roswell, NM, communities across 12 US states, several midwestern galleries, and many private collections. Steven is inspired by the contemporary art of California muralists such as John Pugh and Kent Twitchell, the works of the great Norman Rockwell, Christian artist Thomas Blackshear, Jackson Pollock, and the renowned works of Davinci and Renoir. 2006.
In 1999, Steven sculpted the world's only life size statue of Billy the Kid, and that same year, the only lifesize, realistic Alien for the International UFO Museum in Roswell, NM. His work appeared in the Aug 2002 edition of Oklahoma Today Magazine. He is probably best known for his public mural work, over 400 in 12 US states since 1986, the most being in his home state of Oklahoma.
The many themes of Steven's signs and murals include works regarding people, animals and wildlife, nature scenes, and nostalgic subjects. Using Betty Edward's renowned method of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", Steven has taught numerous people of all ages how to draw "realistically" over the years via the Hobby Lobby chain of Arts and Crafts Stores, public schools, private studio classes and in home tutoring.
Steven is the author of several books on art and life, and contributes a weekly newspaper column for an Arkansas publication.
Having begun in 1986, atleast 30 million Americans in 12 states view his public murals on a day to day basis, and atleast 30,000 read his weekly column titled "Coffee With Me."
He offers his talents through an in town studio as well as a modest home studio in the shadow of Sugarloaf Mountain in beautiful eastern Oklahoma, where his maternal roots go back 4 generations.
